Only 3 hours with fast boat from Harstad you find the “Paris of the North” – Tromsø. A university city with an urban flair as well as the arctic feeling of being way up north!
In addition, did you know that Tromsø is considered the northernmost city in the world with a population over 50,000?
Most of Tromsø is situated on the island Tromsøya, including the city center and even the airport! The city also houses the largest number of wooden houses in the whole of Northern Norway, the oldest one from 1789.
Welcome to the city where the arctic meets the south and where old meets new!
This aerial tramway takes you from sea lever up until 420 metres above sea level in only 4 minutes. On top, the stunning view will take your breath away!
Food and drinks can be bought at Fjellstua restaurant. Many locals as well as tourists use the upper level as a starting point for their mountain hike – or you can simply enjoy the view from the viewer desk.
At this museum, you can experience arctic wilderness and interesting research about arctic climate and its animals. It also houses an aquarium where you can see fish and other sea creatures – and even seals!
Build in 1965 and is visible from the Tromsø Island, the Tromsø bridge and when landing by plane at Tromsø airport – this is truly a landmark for the city! The organ comprises 2940 pipes, and the bellows are even made of reindeer hide.
Welcome to the oldest scientific institution in northern Norway – established in 1872 and houses today 2 million objects. You can learn about the Aurora physics at the museum and see the beauty of alpine flowers at the Tromsø Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden.
On the Tromsø island you can find a northern lights observatory – a research center where you can learn about astronomy, the stars and the fascinating aurora borealis! It was founded in 1928 and is today a part of the University in Tromsø, UIT, and has 6 employees.
Shopping! In Tromsø you can find everything you need – and more. The main street, Storgata, houses many cozy shops as well as trendy cafés. As every city, Tromsø also has shopping centers and will even get the first IKEA in northern Norway.
Lets not forget about the nature – Tromsø IS nature. Surrounded by fjords and steep mountains you can sit and enjoy the magnificent view from your hotel room or go for a mountain hike in summer as well as winter.
For ski enthusiast, an alpine ski park is situated just outside the Tromsø island and miles and miles of cross country tracks as well. Or why not just take the mountain cable car all the way up and simply just feel the fresh arctic breeze on your cheeks!
