The city of Harstad is a perfect gateway to great Lofoten experiences!
The city is situated in the north on Hinnøya, Norways largest island, and the first Lofoten island to enter when arriving from north.Harstad Airport at Evenes is only a 35 minutes’ drive from Harstad, the largest city on Hinnøya and the 3.th largest in the northern part of Norway.
Hinnøya connects the islands of Troms, Vesterålen and Lofoten with nice roads through beautiful scenery, stunning mountain landscapes and spectacular fjords.
Stock fish and hiking
From Svolvær you can drive onwards toward Kabelvåg and visiting the Lofoten Aquarium. A few more kilometers and you will reach the small and cozy village of Henningsvær.
The first thing you will spot is stockfish – a must try dish when you visit the area. Hiking and climbing enthusiasts come here every year to climb on the steep mountains in Henningsvær.
Hiking in general is popular in Lofoten, with many peaks to hike on the highest one is Higravstinden (1161 masl). You will also spot many kayakers in the area, and you can also rent a kayak to explore the area by sea.
Be a Viking!
The Lofotr Viking museum is situated at Borg, here you can visit the largest Viking-age house in the world! 83 meters long and is reconstructed just like it just to look like.
Join a real Viking feast, visit the marked, the exhibition or just imagine how it used to be here – 1000 years ago when the Vikings ruled the area!
Beach after beach
If you drive on the small roads, you might reach a “secret” beach – only for you!
As Lofoten is known for its long, white sandy beaches, you never know when the next one will show up. Ramberg beach, Haukland beach, Rørvik beach and the beach at Uttakleiv are just a few of many.
Bring a tent and enjoy the midnight sun and sunrise on a Lofoten beach – it will take your breath away!
Galleries and museums
Some 20 galleries and museums can be found in Lofoten. Many locals in Lofoten are artists and many artist from around the world have settled in the area. Galleri Espolin, Sund Fishinng museum, Kaviar Factory, the Lofoten museum, just to mention a few.
If you are interested in glasswork, the glass hut at Vikten is a must! Driving on a small and narrow road, the tiny Village of Vikten suddenly appears with its amazing glass hut and charming houses.
The “post card” stop before Å
Reine is a town you have seen before – at least on postcards.
As this is the most photographed village in Lofoten for post cards. Being here, you will understand why. The steep mountains and the fishing houses are the perfect objects for a photo lens!
From here you are near the end – Å. This is also the last letter of our alphabet and is the last stop in Lofoten.
