About
An evening walk along the coast to a peninsula shaped by history. Learn about the Viking past, enjoy a private viewing of a beautiful medieval church, alongside breathtaking views of Norwegian nature. Welcome to the holdfast of the famous raider Asbjørn Selsbane. Welcome, to Trondenes.
The path along the fjord
Join us for a walk from the center of town along the coast. The roads give way to a well-maintained path with wooden walkways as we make our way to Trondenes. The beautiful scenery and views of the fjord are sure to make an impression.
Trondenes Church
Surrounded by fortified walls, the northernmost medieval stone church in the world is an imposing sight as we reach the peninsula. The parish was the biggest and wealthiest landowner in the middle-ages. Two centuries passed before the building was finished. Enter the church and see the baptismal font where the Vikings abandoned their heathen ways, and for the first time, embraced Christ as their savior.
Altevågen
The chieftain Asbjørn Selsbane called Trondenes his home. Mentioned in the king’s sagas by Snorri Sturluson, Altevågen was the place where he gathered his men for battle. Stand in the spot where Asbjørn rallied his soldiers, before he was murdered by the king’s men.
See the location of his boathouse, burial mounds, and beautiful views of Grytøya at the holy place of Altevågen.
